LEAD WHERE YOU ARE PLANTED

While a privilege and an honor, it is also hard and often painfully refining. Leadership has the ability to reveal one’s heart, motives, and even one’s character. And, while we may not hold high positions or lofty titles, we all lead in one capacity or another.

Simply put, leadership is influence, and everyone has influence. Of course, some might be providing lessons leaning more towards what not to do, but, nonetheless, influence is present. People watch for reactions and attitudes; they watch how trials are handled and pay attention to whether or not there is equilibrium between words and actions. While leadership is both significant and weighty, it does not have to be a burden, nor does it require mastery of new skills. Leadership is reflected in the way we live our daily lives and use our giftings and talents.

The beautiful thing is that leadership is not a one size fits all; in fact, when we are confident in who we are we will naturally lead and impact others in ways that are unique. Frustration sets in when we try to lead by imitating or being something that we were never meant to be. The world is desperate for authentic leaders.

Of course, there are tests that will tell you which animal, letter or number you are, and while those might give you insight into why you act or think a certain way, they will never be able to capture the fullness of who you are. No test or person will ever be able to reveal who you are to your depths, only you can provide glimpses of her to the world. These tests were meant to be a springboard of understanding, not a box in which to confine.

For years I never considered myself a leader. Too extraverted to be an introvert, and too introverted to be an extravert, I didn’t think I had the right skills or personality. I have discovered, however, that although my approach to people, problems, and solutions might be different than others, these differences are what set me apart as a leader. Where I once struggled to find my place I have found a passion. I find great joy in helping others see their abilities and skills as valuable, wanting them to make the greatest (positive) influence on those around them every day.

Leading well will look different for each person and I am so excited to hear stories of how you are leading well where you are right now. If you are not already receiving and giving encouragement to others, and even if you are, I would encourage you to check out Propel Women. It is an organization with the sole purpose of celebrating “every woman in her passion, purpose, and potential.” Propel offers online resources, big events and conferences throughout the year, but perhaps the most beneficial resource is the local chapter meetings. To find a local chapter near you check out the local chapters directory.

I am so glad you’re here. The world needs your voice.
