BETTER TOGETHER

You’re probably familiar with the phrase: “behind every great man is a great woman. It was coined sometime in the 40s and offers a nod of notice to the wife, or maybe even the mother. Throughout history, women have been taught the art of the supporting-role, learning how to encourage, serve and uplift others. In assuming this role, one is able to celebrate in the accomplishment without needing the credit. And, women should absolutely support men.

I’m not upset by the behind rather than beside because I think there are times that we need to stand behind others, offering wind for their sails, cheering from behind-the-scenes. It is an act of service that allows others to flourish. My concern, however, is that the opposite is not always modeled: behind every great woman is a great man.

This is not where I direct a spotlight to focus on the negative, there is plenty of that going around. No, this is where I want to celebrate the men who do support, serve and cheer on the women in their lives. The pendulum of life often swings to extremes to (over)composite for injustices, poor practices or any myriad of issues. So, while I am so glad that women are speaking out for equality, I hope this movement does not leave a wake of hurt or hatred towards men.

To you, the men encouraging and supporting the women in your lives, thank you. We see you.

Here’s to the men who champion the dreams, causes and passions of women. To the men who believe that her success does not steal from your portion or potential or promotion.

Here’s to the men who can let go of control and allow her to shine. To the men who trust women by word and deed.

Here’s to the men who believe that her voice is important and needs to be heard. To the men willing to help open doors rather than create roadblocks.

Here’s to the men who do not feel the need to domineer. To the men who lead by example and encourage women to do the same.

Here’s to the men who believe women have equal value and that their work is equally important. To the men who believe her dream is more than a hobby.

Here’s to the men who are willing to stoop in service in order to lift up the women in their lives. To the men who offer correction or criticism in a kind and helpful manner, rather than from an attitude of superiority.

To these men, for all of this and so much more, thank you.

Celebrating an individual should never be at the expense of another. Regardless of race, gender, age or status, we should be encouraging and championing those around us. We were never meant to do this on our own, we need each other.

There is a balance that can never be known aside from men and women working, serving and leading together. Because when we get right down to it, we are just better together.

Be generous with your encouragement.

Let those around you know that you appreciate their love and support.

  1. Yes!! Thanks Andrea–I think you’re spot on!
I have no problem getting behind the success of others, male or female, and really appreciate when others do the same. While I do feel like there are really patronizing ways that some people(both male and female!) show support for women, when it is done with sincerity and genuine acknowledgement, it’s being the body as we should be, and we do truly all win. I’m really thankful for the great men in my life, especially as a single woman, and for the ways they’ve got my back in work, in church, and in life!

    1. Absolutely! I agree, friend. Unfortunately, there will be those that offer encouragement in a patronizing way, and I’m so glad that you are surrounded by men who are sincere and genuine. You are full of joy, and have such a gift for teaching and recruiting, (and so much more). 🙂
