RETHINKING PEACE

Peace and quiet are often paired together as a request. Parents and teachers alike beg for just a bit of relief, some peace and quiet. When stated together, linked by the conjunction and, the line where one term ends and the other begins blurs. And I wonder if we have essentially made the two synonymous of each other.

I know I have.

But, peace is complicated and, to exist, it requires more than simply a low volume of noise; it demands participation and compromise and understanding. Peace can only be found where action has been taken.

Wikipedia describes peace by using two main concepts: exhibiting harmony; being absent of hostility.

Harmony requires different parts to work together in a pleasing and complimentary manner. In music, harmony refers to the sounds different frequencies and pitches create when they occur simultaneously. In life, harmony requires different individuals to live together in such a manner that promotes the wellbeing of all.

The absence of hostility requires some bending, compromising and taking into consideration the viewpoints of others. Hostility occurs when one becomes too rigid in expectations, dismissing anything that is different than ones own thinking or behaviors.

There is much more to unpack, I’m sure, but my concern is not to flesh out every possible definition and idea surrounding peace; rather, my concern is in how we can implement peace, today, right now.

I’m sure we’re all familiar with the terms peace keeper and peace maker. Although I didn’t know the terms as a child, I probably would have wanted to be seen as more of a peace keeper in the past, but as my understanding changes I now hope to fall more into the category of being a peace maker. As one who desires peace, I have offered some of my own thoughts in describing the peace keeper and the peace maker.

Peacekeeper: Although on the surface this seems like a valiant and noble effort, this as someone who is passive in their attempts at peace. This person is probably nice and sweet, and quiet in nature. Perhaps this is someone who minds their own business and keeps their head down. Someone who considers silence, even about things like inequality and injustice, as a form of maintaining peace. This person refuses to make waves, and strives to live in a way that does not bother others.

Peacemaker: This is a person who is willing to speak up on behalf of others. This person recognizes problems and works with others in a constructive way to make right the wrongs of society. A peacemaker might have strong feelings on issues but is willing to listen to differing opinions and work toward a compromise that will benefit all. A peacemaker is willing to raise their voice, while also understanding that truth needs to be spoken in love.

In short, a peace keeper’s main concern is controlling their own actions in relation to peace; a peace maker works to invite and influence others in taking steps towards creating peace among themselves and others.

And, really, peace might need to be quiet at times, but one who is truly seeking peace can never stay quiet when there is discord of any kind.
